A NEW TRUCK:
In January 2004, Lyle wanted to buy a different truck, possibly a used Dodge Ram 3500 diesel 4x4 truck. Well checking into them, we found they were nearly as much as a new one or had lots of miles on them. Even though buying a new 2004 Dodge Ram 3500 dually diesel 4x4 truck seemed to out of the question.
In the long run, it ended up making more sense to spend the additional money and get a new one with the warranty. The $3,000 rebate was to end January 2nd. With some persuasion, the dealership reduced the total cost of the truck another $900.
The truck available locally was white and I wanted a black one, which they said was no problem to find for us. Lyle still wanted the white one and I still wanted a black one. The lady that was working with us said to flip a coin. We flipped a coin and I won, but we only had until 6 PM to make up our mind or lose the rebate. They said finding a black one was no problem. But they were wrong!
Checking a five state area, they were willing to bring in a black truck for us at no additional charge, but they were unable to find one. And they had said it was no problem to find one for us! Well Lyle won by default, we had to take the white one or wait and lose the $3,000 rebate.
The truck we had was a 1977 4x4 Chevy Silverado, we bought new in 1976, 27 1/2 years ago. So I know we were due for a new truck. Even though Lyle had changed the engine a few times and painted it a few times; I know it was probably time to buy a new one. But they sure have went up in price, we had purchased that truck for only $8,300!
ABOUT OUR HORSES:
SERYA DJ WITEZ --
A 1997 black roan *WITEZ II Preservation 14.2
hand purebred gelding. Seven lines to *WITEZ II in his first six generations.
Started last Summer, ridden in the ND Badlands, but still needing an
experienced rider. Puppy dog disposition, very friendly and easy to catch.
Loves to be petted. Extremely athletic, endurance and performance horse
prospect. DJ's lines are known for being great Cutting horses. Should be a good
all around horse with time and the right training.
We came to a agreement January 7th with the lady, that had bought MYCHAELA from us to buy DJ. Liz was moving in February to Spokane, WA. Liz had moved from AK, to MT, to TX and now to WA in 9 months. So MYCHAELA also went from ND, to MT, to TX and now to WA in 3 months. Liz wrote: "Mychaela is now eating carrots and apples and today she ate some Nilla wafers. She is so funny and so much fun and just beautiful. I can't wait to have DJ with her. I'm sure, they are going to be a stunning pair."
DAMA WITEZ --
We also came to an agreement and traded DAMA WITEZ
to a lady in WA that has TRIXI WITEZ BA. TASHA's first 1997 blue black daughter
by EL NIGADIN. She had a coming two year old bay 7/8 Arabian pinto colt by
TRIXI. He was 14.3 hands at not yet two years old. He was born April 1, 2002.
His sire, CUSTODY is 15+ hands and 1200 lbs., a 3/4 Arabian, Double *BASK with
*SERAFIX and *SILVER DRIFT bay tobiano stallion. She says that CUSTODY is a
great horse, anyone can ride him, even though he is a stallion.
This was suppose to be to get our numbers down. But now we were thinking more to get DAMA a home where it was warmer in the winter, than here. DAMA gets cold in the winter and shivers here. (We are to also receive back a black filly by their stallion, HA SIRIBN WITEZ (our Maggie's sire) out of either TRIXI, DAMA or DREAMER (Credo's half sister); our choice as part of the deal.)
Dana would come in February, bring the colt, which I told her must to gelded first, she agreed. Pick up DAMA, also take DJ back with her and drop him off in Spokane, WA for Liz.
This was a hard decision to make for DAMA. But Dana said she really would love to have DAMA, but she was still making payments on MAGGIE's sire, SIR. So even though this wasn't actually the way we planned it, it would be the best for DAMA.
HORSES LEAVE AND CREDO ARRIVES --
Dana and Finn Pedersen came
Sunday morning, February 22nd with CREDO. Then DAMA and DJ were on their way by
noon. They got into Spokane, WA around 2 AM with DJ, one thousand miles from
here. I think Liz should do well with DJ. DJ can be such a loving horse, when
he trusts you. When I brushed DJ up before he left, he just put his head in
between my arms and wanted to be hugged.
Liz's Dad had passed away on Friday morning, so she drove up to Spokane, WA on Saturday with MYCHAELA and then had to leave to go to her Dad's funeral Sunday morning in Southern CA. So she was going to miss meeting DANA and being there when DJ arrived. Liz was going through MT to Spokane, WA on Saturday morning from Missoula, MT where she had stopped over night and Dana was coming this way to ND Friday night and had stopped overnight in ID. I called both gals and got the two together Saturday morning, so they could meet and talk with each other as they passed by each other in Missoula. They both liked each other and thought that was a fun idea. Dana said that Liz is very sensitive and nice.
Liz wrote Tuesday from CA. She said that Tom, back in WA was very impressed with DJ. So sweet and loving, while MYCHAELA is full of herself and kind of catch me if you can. Liz said she couldn't wait to get back up there to meet DJ and to start working with him. It sounds like DJ and MYCHAELA are getting along great next to each other.
(UPDATE: During the summer, Liz moved with DJ and MYCHAELA back to TX again. And now as of November, Liz had moved back to Alaska with MYCHAELA and DJ.)
Dana wrote Monday night, February 23rd: "We are home and all is well. Dama is a queen. She fell right into the routine of the trip. However she was glad to be out of the trailer. Dama has been so calm about everything. She is so sweet and kind. She didn't even mind our llama."
(UPDATE: DAMA WITEZ had a black FILLY with star and snip around 3:00 AM May 6th for Dana in Lakebay, WA. Dana is calling her D'MARA WITEZ BA. She's a keeper for Dana.)
HF CREDO WITEZ --
So then, as of Sunday February 22nd, we had a
new young gelding, HF CREDO WITEZ. CREDO was 14.3 hands and should mature
around 15 hands or above. He was quite leggy and put together right. A dark
bay, not a black. HF CREDO WITEZ came here from Lakebay, WA in exchange for
DAMA WITEZ.
Update on CREDO: GUESS WHAT? Another Liz has purchased a horse from us. CREDO left on May 25th for Temecula, CA. He had only been with us for three months, now CREDO is in Southern CA. Liz wrote July 19th: "Credo is doing wonderful. He was ponied with my best mustang and BOY can he trot!! I put a bare back pad on him and tightened it and he couldn't care less. He has a home for life here. He is becoming SO affectionate with me and just LOVES to have his lips kissed."
SERYA GLORY BE --
The end of April, we gave GLORY a lifetime lease
and home with Dana, who now had DAMA too. We didn't ask Dana for any money,
just that over the course of GLORY's breeding career, we will have the
opportunity to have three of her foals back, our choice. GLORY will produce for
both of us, black 28.1% *Witez II Preservation foals bred with HA SIRIBN WITEZ,
Maggie's black 28.1% *Witez II Preservation sire. There aren't allot of *Witez
II Preservation mares and stallions left, especially black ones. Since Glory is
homozygous, we know all their foals together will be black and *Witez II
Preservation too. Pretty neat for both of us!
TBA SKIPPER --
SKIPPER's contract for purchase also changed. We
now get SKIPPER's first four Palomino foals out of her half brother NICKOHLI
WITEZ BA. EL NIGADIN and GENESIS KOHLI's last foal, a liver chestnut 1999
stallion with flaxen mane and tail, three socks and strip. TBA SKIPPER is a
1999 Palomino mare by EL NIGADIN out of a 1/2 Arabian Palomino mare. SKIPPER
foaled a chestnut filly with just a star on May 5th. Though her dam, SKIPPER is
a Palomino, her filly is a chestnut like her sire, NICKOHLI. A very nice filly
for SKIPPER's first foal. This foal is a double EL NIGADIN granddaughter.
(SKIPPER IS 6.84% *WITEZ II WITH FOUR LINES, NICK IS 16.4% WITH FIVE LINES TO
*WITEZ II. THIS FILLY IS 11.62% WITEZ II WITH NINE LINES.)
NEW FOAL:
EDINA WITEZ BA --
A purebred foal was due for WITEZ BLACK ARABIANS
on May 31, 2004, and was foaled June 7, 2004. EDINA is a VERY FRIENDLY Liver
Chestnut Arabian filly with a faint star.
EDINA's dam is DANA WITEZ BA, our lovely 16.4% *Witez II (7 lines) blue black mare by our late blue black NIGA son, EL NIGADIN. DANA's dam is an extremely typey black broodmare, DAMA WITEZ, whose sire was an English Pleasure Champion. Very beautiful and of extreme type.
EDINA's sire is AN OPUS ECLIPSE, our pure Polish black stallion by OPUS ONE+ and out of SATURNIA by STRIKE. ECLIPSE has 18 lines to Ofir, and has a wonderful disposition. EDINA has 27 lines to OFIR, who is the renown sire of *WITEZ II.
EDINA's parents and grandparents were all black. If EDINA is bred to a homozygous black stallion, all her foals will be black. Bred to a non homozygous black stallion, her foals will be 50/50 black or liver.
Now there are two 2004 black half sisters out of DAMA WITEZ in WA and her daughter, DANA WITEZ BA at home in ND. D'MARA and EDINA are so beautiful and of extreme type. We're very happy with what we are seeing by our ECLIPSE.
BADLANDS TRAIL RIDING:
Thursday July 22nd through Monday the 26th, we went to the ND Badlands with our two Black Tobiano Arabian Riding Horses. KAPTAIN did fine in the Badlands. KAPTAIN can really trot and move out. He and FANCY were both very tired by Sunday night.
We had the whole herd of Buffalo in our camp Thursday night. Friday morning we rode until about 2 PM and then again in the evening. Saturday we rode only one long ride until 4 PM. Sunday we rode in the morning and evening. We saw at least a half dozen Rattlesnakes, never saw so many before. I was an inch away from stepping on one Saturday afternoon, while talking to Paul, my Father-in-Law on my cell phone. Most of the Rattlers we saw were Prairie Rattlers, they are not as aggressive as Diamond Back Rattlers.
We never saw so many Elk so many times before, forty one time. We saw deer and antelope several times, even a beaver crossing the river Sunday night in the dark. We did some tuff riding that night, coming back from a 14 mile ride in the dark at 11 PM.
Joe, his family and another young couple from MN said they are definitely coming back next year. They said there are no trails, anywhere in MN or WI like this. We also couldn't of asked for better weather.
BLACK HILLS AND BIG HORN TRAIL RIDING:
On our next trip, Saturday August 14th we drove to Hill City, SD and rode in the Black Hills and the next day we rode up to Harney peak. Great weather. EXTREME rocky riding
Then we drove over to the Cloud Peak Wilderness area above Buffalo, WY in the Big Horns on Monday August 16th, made camp and let horses rest. We stayed there to the next Monday the 23rd. Rode Tuesday through Saturday and took Sunday off. Camped at 9,100 feet and rode up to over 11,000 feet. Very beautiful and very cold. I wore my ski pants every night, it froze every night and we wore Outback Coats nearly everyday riding. It even snowed on us when we rode up to Bomber Mountain on Thursday.
Most days we rode around 18 miles and six to nine hours. Breathtakingly beautiful, we will go again! There are many beautiful lakes high up in the Mts. We joined the Back Country Horsemen group, so we were guided around each day by one of them. They took us places we would have never been able to find on our own or we surely would have gotten lost, had we of tried to on our own. There were thirteen of us that met together, camped and rode together; seven from WI, four from MN and only us from ND.
DAY BY DAY DIARY --
Tuesday 8-17: Gods country, Elk
Mountain above Lake Solitude. Gene Little asked if we wanted to join them on a
ride. I think that was the best thing, being we had not been there before.
Wednesday 8-18: The second day was the Gold Mine, a long 9 hr day 18
miles past Battle Park, Painted Rock Creek and the Hyatt cow camp -
bushwhacking and then finding the waterfall.
Thursday 8-19: We found
the Lost Cabin. We made it back before it started raining hard.
Friday
8-20: We rode to Bomber Mountain. Another 18 mile ride, beautiful lakes,
snow and clouds. So high up, it was snowing. Came back to camp and skidded logs
to the fire.
Saturday 8-21: Rode to Lake Solitude. Beautiful trail
by the water and waterfall.
Sunday 8-22: Took Sunday
off.
Monday 8-23: We drove to Cody, WY Monday 8-23 and dropped our
horses off with Ayres Acres Arabians.
Tuesday 8-24: We drove through
Yellowstone.
Wednesday 8-25: Drove home making it home by midnight
after visiting with Ann Ayres in Cody, WY; Angie Jones in Laurel, MT and Pam
Cale in Wibaux, MT. A 1750 mile round trip.
